Low Latency 5G Core Experiments on FABRIC — Stitching Together Innovation Webinar

With the deployment of higher-speed radio channels, emerging cellular use cases will place a heightened emphasis on the performance of the cellular core network. The core, being built based on Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies, is responsible for several critical control plane operations and is also the anchor point for handling device mobility. The team has built L25GC+, a high performance, low-latency 3GPP-compliant 5G core (5GC) based on their NFV platform, OpenNetVM. L25GC+ leverages shared memory processing, eliminating data copies and serialization/deserialization of messages exchanged between the disaggregated 5G core components, achieving much lower latency for cellular control plane operations.  L25GC+ reduces control plane event completion times by 50% and improves data packet latency by 2x during paging and handover events. Overall, L25GC+ optimizes the cellular core, improving latency, scalability, and the user’s quality of experience. 

L25GC+ is being deployed in the FABRIC  testbed infrastructure. This webinar will describe L25GC+ and then present initial results on 5G control plane events and the data plane QoS with the implementation running on FABRIC. The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A segment, allowing attendees to engage directly with the presenters and gain valuable insights for applying these techniques to their research.

Presenters

Dr. K. K. Ramakrishnan

Dr. K. K. Ramakrishnan is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. He joined AT&T Bell Labs in 1994 and was with AT&T Labs-Research from its inception in 1996, until 2013, as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff. Before 1994, he was a Technical Director and Consulting Engineer in Networking at Digital Equipment Corporation. Between 2000 and 2002, he was at TeraOptic Networks, Inc., as Founder and Vice President.
Dr. Ramakrishnan is an ACM Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, and an AT&T Fellow, recognized for his fundamental contributions to communication networks, including his work on congestion control, traffic management, and VPN services. His work on the “DECbit” congestion avoidance protocol received the ACM Sigcomm Test of Time Paper Award in 2006, and he received the AT&T Technology Medal in 2012 for his work on Mobile Video Delivery. He received the 2024 ACM SIGCOMM Award recognizing his lifetime contribution to the field of communication networks. He has published over 300 papers and has 186 patents issued in his name. K. K. received his MTech from the Indian Institute of Science (1978), MS (1981), and Ph.D. (1983) in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA.

Shixiong Qi

Shixiong Qi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UC Riverside. His research interests lie in the broad area of cloud computing, including serverless computing and its applications in areas such as cellular networks, NFV, and middleboxes.

Jyh-Cheng Chen

Jyh-Cheng Chen received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1998. He was a Research Scientist at Bellcore/Telcordia Technologies, Morristown, NJ, USA, from 1998 to 2001, and a Senior Scientist at Telcordia Technologies, Piscataway, NJ, USA, from 2008 to 2010. From 2001 to 2008, he was with the Department of Computer Science at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Hsinchu, Taiwan, where he served as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor. Since 2010, he has been a faculty member at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), formerly National Chiao Tung University (NCTU). He is currently a Chair Professor and the Dean of the College of Computer Science at NYCU. From January 2016 to December 2018, he served as the Convener of the Computer Science Program at the Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan. Dr. Chen is a Fellow of the IEEE and currently serves as the Chair of the Technical Steering Committee for free5GC, a Linux Foundation project.
